The Tigers try to even the series against the Yankees Sunday afternoon, throwing Max Scherzer to match up against Freddy Garcia.

The Yankees had the benefit of just an inning and a half of Justin Verlander against the Tigers in Game 1, and rode their ability to hit the cover off the ball to a 9-3 victory, and lead the ALDS 1-0. Game 2 won't feature the intrigue of the initial starting pitching matchups or a 27-hour start-to-finish time, but it's still the playoffs.

Sunday's starting pitchers are a juxtaposition of young and old, stuff and grit, chaos and control. The Tigers send out Max Scherzer, a 27-year-old who can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the bigs with his combination of velocity and breaking pitches. However, he struggles with command and is prone to giving up big innings.

Freddy Garcia is, well, the opposite. The 35-year-old former washout has been solid if unspectacular this year, using a mix of slow fastballs with slower curves and even slower changes. He's getting by on veteran wiles alone, but he's been more effective than Scherzer and exactly what the Yankees needed.

Neither pitcher is truly capable of shutting down each of these lineups. Don't be surprised if this is a slugfest.
