The Cardinals will try to even their NLDS series with the Phillies, thowing Chris Carpenter on short rest against Cliff Lee in Philadelphia
The Cardinals will try to bounce back after a debacle 11-6 loss against the Phillies in Game 1, and will do so behind the arm of their ace, Chris Carpenter, pitching on three days' rest. The Phillies will send out the second of their four aces, Cliff Lee, to face Carpenter and the Redbirds.
After Kyle Lohse's implosion in Game 1, the Cardinals had to turn to Carpenter to stop the bleeding. Carpenter, if you remember, pitched a two-hit shutout on Wednesday, the last game of the season, to send them to the postseason. Tony LaRussa will now turn to him to try to extend that run.
However, the Cardinals' offense will have to contend with Lee, who is famously dominant in the playoffs. Though he had a hiccup in the World Series last year while pitching for the Rangers, his career postseason ERA is 2.13, and he's had three complete games in 10 starts.
