Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux is a bit of a hot commodity with teams looking for a manager right now. He's presided over the renaissance of Rangers pitching that the team has been looking for just about their entire existence, and he has a sweet, sweet mustache. As far as qualifications go, that's about as good as prospective managers get. Alas, he will not be the next manager of the Red Sox, though. From Jon Heyman:
mike maddux has withdrawn from consideration for red sox managers job. my impression is he may be favored for #cubs job
Makes sense, but Peter Gammons quickly tweeted that Maddux might not be interested in anything that isn't in Texas:
Mike Maddux hasn't been to Chicago, Boston wasn't good family fit, not yet sure he can give more time away from family. Stay tuned ..."We're in a good situation," Maddux says of his Ranger job. "My family moved here, the kids will be in school for 3 more years here."
The Red Sox will presumably turn to their long list of candidates and pick someone else. Terry Francona is still available if they're looking for previous experience.
