The Philadelphia Phillies are -- stop me if you've heard this before -- built for the short term. They've traded away prospects for players who could help right away, and they've signed players to contracts that probably aren't going to age well.
So it was weird, then, that the Phillies were thinking about letting Jimmy Rollins walk. His departure would leave a substantial hole, both offensively and defensively, in the Phillies' plans. He wants a five-year deal, which the Phillies aren't willing to give, but it's unlikely that anyone is going to give that to him.
Surprise! It looks like Rollins is probably staying. From Tom Hadricourt:
Brewers hearing that Jimmy Rollins is staying with Phillies, so looks like he's out as possible SS option. Furcal, Gonzalez, Yuni left.
Ken Rosenthal doesn't see it as a done deal yet, but Hadricourt is a Brewers beat writer, and he's likely hearing from some Brewers people who can afford to be candid. If the Phillies aren't close to re-signing Rollins, they should probably read the blockquote again. With every shortstop that's snatched up, Yuni Betancourt becomes more and more of a possibility. Go, go, go!
