Last Saturday night, Tigers catcher/DH Victor Martinez tweaked his groin, and was held out of the starting lineup on Sunday. Martinez returned to the lineup Monday night for a game against the Mariners, but was pulled in the second inning after aggravating the injury. And now, according to Jason Beck, he's going on the disabled list.
There had been some speculation that the Tigers would just rest Martinez on the bench for a few days, but it seems they're going the safe route instead. It's probably not the worst idea in the world, given that groin injuries have a habit of lingering up if you don't let them heal all the way.
To take Martinez's roster spot, the Tigers recalled catcher Omir Santos, who will serve as the backup to Alex Avila. Martinez had made five starts behind the dish, but was primarily the designated hitter. Over 65 trips to the plate, Martinez owns a .250 average, with four doubles and two homers.
