Roy Oswalt Leaves Phillies After Tornadoes Strike Near Home

Stay connected for news and updates

Earlier on Wednesday, we heard that Roy Oswalt had left the Phillies for personal reasons. There was some speculation that he was hurt, and there was other speculation that it was a family matter, and now general manager Ruben Amaro has confirmed that it is not the former, and more of the latter. From Jim Salisbury:

There has been a tremendous amount of tornado activity near Roy’s home in Mississippi resulting in several tragic deaths and significant devastation to the area. Because of this, Roy is concerned about his family’s well-being. He has chosen to take time to make sure there wasn’t significant damage to his home, but more importantly, to make certain that his wife and children are okay.

A year ago, the home of Oswalt's parents was destroyed by a tornado, so one can understand his elevated concern.

As for Oswalt's next scheduled start on Tuesday, the Phillies say they're taking things day-by-day, but also that they expect Oswalt to be back in time to pitch. Of course, in the event that Oswalt needs a little more time, the team probably isn't going to push it, given the sensitive circumstances.
