So I was watching highlights of Michael Pineda striking out Tigers with ease and, as a friend of mine put it, it's impossible not to make guttural noises. If I was a GM and had to choose one pitcher to start with, it'd be Pineda.
What's so striking about the kid isn't his combination of immense size and a fluid motion. The ball doesn't even look like it's going that fast because everything about him is so damn smooth. I know the knock on him is that he only has two pitches, but he's freaking 22 and will surely develop a changeup and more pitches over time. Like yeah, Lincecum, Jiminez, Kershaw, etc. are more accomplished. But Pineda's crazy stature makes me believe that his arm can survive and thrive over time, particularly in that ballpark...
