Apparently Matt Holliday does not have the Wolverine-like healing powers that he had hoped for. Another update from Fox Sports Midwest, this time with a quote from St. Louis Cardinals' manager Tony La Russa:
Tony says chances are "slim" Holliday plays in San Fran series.
Since La Russa is actually the guy who takes the pen and writes names into the lineup card, this should close the door on Holliday starting over the weekend. If the slugger does find his way into a game, it will most likely to be as a pinch-hitter.
Allen Craig is in the lineup today in Holliday's absence, hitting cleanup. While Craig has done well in Holliday's stead, having him hit fourth in the order probably isn't what St. Louis had in mind when the season started.
If Holliday returns after the weekend, it will still represent a quick recovery from surgery to remove his appendix on April 1st. The Cardinals declined to place him on disabled list, gambling that his potential return before the 15 days were up was more valuable than an extra roster spot.
