Bad news for Seattle Mariners closer David Aardsma, who was making rehab appearances for Triple-A Tacoma, trying to get back to the majors after issues with his hip. After a couple of unfortunate outings in the minors, Aardsma had an MRI on his right arm, and it confirmed that something was going wrong with more than his hip. From Shannon Drayer:
David Aardsma has a grade 2 sprain of his ucl and will see Dr Yocum
Dr. Lewis Yocum will figure out what the best course of action is, but it's possible that Aardsma could need Tommy John surgery, though it's also possible to avoid surgery with rest and rehabilitation depending on the severity of the sprain.
The Mariners have been without Aardsma all season, turning to Brandon League with a lead in the ninth inning. League has done well so far, earning nine saves and sporting a 3.77 ERA in 14-2/3 innings. A return by Aardsma would have gone a long way towards strengthening the bullpen, even if all he did were push Chris Ray off the roster.
