Two former Cubs, now with the Baltimore Orioles, have both suffered injuries that are going to land them on the 15-day disabled list soon.
First baseman Derrek Lee, who had neck and back trouble for his last years with the Cubs, has a different issue now — an oblique strain he suffered during Monday’s game against the Red Sox. Lee is hitting .231/.311/.346 in 156 at-bats with four home runs.
Cesar Izturis, now a backup infielder for the Orioles who has had only 26 at-bats this season and only five hits, has been having numbness in his right hand that may be related to Tommy John surgery he had almost six years ago.
The Orioles are expected to recall first baseman Brandon Snyder and lefthanded pitcher Troy Patton to replace Lee and Izturis on the 25-man roster. Snyder, the Orioles’ No. 1 draft pick in 2005, is likely to share time with Luke Scott at first base while Lee is out.
Rain threatens to postpone Tuesday’s Red Sox/Orioles game at Fenway Park; if so, these moves might not be made until Wednesday.
