I mean, real news. Because each of those teams has so many passionate fans that every player who wears the livery of either team, no matter how briefly or insignificantly, will be remembered by many thousands of fans for as long as they (the fans) are alive.
Or, to put all of this another way ... Welcome to the Boston Red Sox, Drew Sutton!
Pete Abraham this afternoon:
Drew Sutton is in left field taking balls off the wall from coach Ron Johnson. So, yes, he has been called up and added to the roster.
The Sox are sending Jose Iglesias back to Pawtucket to get regular playing time. Sutton can play all the infield spots. He was hitting .304 with five homers and 26 RBIs and had played games at second, third, shortstop and left.
One thing I don't quite understand, given just the information above ... If Iglesias needs regular playing time, why call him up in the first place? In two weeks, he's started once and batted four times.
Anyway, I'm sure Theo Epstein had something in mind. But it seems to me that if the Sox just need a rarely used utility guy, Sutton's the better choice. Now 28, Sutton can play almost every position and he's got a career .381 on-base percentage in Triple-A with a little pop, so he could actually be used to pinch-hit for one of the catchers in ... well, in a pinch.
