Ryan Doumit Hits DL With Ankle Injury Following Collision

They always say that bad things happen in threes. Always. It is all that they say. Ordinarily, they'll say this about celebrity deaths, but it turns out the same principle carries over to baseball injuries. Wednesday, catcher Buster Posey got blowed up in a home-plate collision, and went on the DL. Friday, catcher Humberto Quintero got blowed up in a home-plate collision, and went on the DL. And Sunday, catcher Ryan Doumit got blowed up in a home-plate collision, so on Monday, he's gone on the DL.

Doumit is suffering from a left ankle sprain ... Doumit left Sunday's game against the Cubs after injuring his ankle in the second inning.

Doumit was injured in a collision with Carlos Pena, and was seen moving around on crutches after the game. He didn't get things as badly as Posey did, but he's still going to need an extended rest.

For as long as Doumit's out, Chris Snyder figures to become the Pirates' regular backstop. The team has also called up Dusty Brown to serve as the backup. The one-time Red Sox prospect owns an .883 OPS with AAA Indianapolis, but isn't likely to see much time.

On Monday, the Pirates also placed infielder Steve Pearce on the DL with a calf strain and called up Josh Harrison. Pearce had recently been seeing a fair bit of action, so the timing here is pretty bad. Harrison's a 23-year-old infielder who with an .816 OPS in Indianapolis.

Ryan Doumit Injury: Pittsburgh Catcher Suffers Ankle Injury In Plate Collision

Sunday afternoon in a game against the Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit suffered an ankle injury while attempting to block the plate. From the Tribune Review's Rob Biertempfel:

Doumit was injured in a collision at home plate with Cubs baserunner Carlos Pena, who scored from third base on a sacrifice fly to right field. Pena`s slide took out Doumit`s feet and Doumit, who was on his knees as he tried to block the plate, twisted his left foot in the collision.

You can see the play here (third clip).

According to Jennifer Langosch, the Pirates "did not place Ryan Doumit on the DL, but it seems a given. He's walking with crutches and headed back to Pittsburgh for an MRI."

Doumit, a switch-hitter, has been splitting time behind the plate this season with Chris Snyder, even though Doumit (as usual) has been one of the better-hitting catchers in the National League. Snyder's done well this season, but the Pirates would like to get Doumit back quickly if only so he can further demonstrate his value as a trade chip.

Meanwhile, Doumit might become the third catcher in just a few days -- following Buster Posey and Humberto Quintero -- to get knocked out of action by a collision at the plate.
