Ty Wigginton Injury Sends Utility Infielder To DL

The Rockies came into the season with a rotating trio of guys who could play second and third base, with Ty Wigginton, Jose Lopez, and Ian Stewart all looking for at-bats between the two positions. Lopez has struggled, Stewart struggled all the way to the minors and back, and now Wigginton is on the disabled list. From the Rockies' official Twitter feed:

#Rockies place Ty Wigginton on 15-day DL w/ left oblique strain. Ian Stewart recalled from AAA. Stewart available tonight.

Stewart just might be the best option for the Rockies at third, so this might be an unfortunate injury with a silver lining. Wigginton was hitting .233/.309/.383 for the Rockies in 60 at-bats, and Stewart used his first trip to the minors since 2008 to hit .361/.500/.750 in 36 at-bats at Triple-A Colorado Springs, albeit with 11 strikeouts. What was once three players for two spots has turned into a scrum for the third base spot only, as Jonathan Herrera has locked down the job at second base for the time being. And Jose Lopez has fared worse than Wigginton.
