Last December, the New York Mets selected 24-year-old righty Pedro Beato in the Rule 5 Draft, and they later made him a part of their Major League bullpen. And Beato's big league career has remarkably begun with 17 earned run-less innings over 11 appearances. Just as Beato was starting to gain everybody's trust, though, we've hit a bump in the road.
The New York Mets placed Pedro Beato on the disabled list Wednesday with right elbow tendinitis, three days after he tossed three scoreless relief innings Sunday in Philadelphia.
The hope is that this isn't anything major, but there's no timetable for Beato's return, so we'll just have to see. The 44 pitches he threw in his most recent appearance were a season high by a comfortable margin.
Lefty Mike O'Connor has been recalled to take Beato's place on the roster and in the bullpen. O'Connor hasn't pitched in the bigs since 2008, when he was terrible, but he's been effective in the early going with AAA Buffalo.
