Thursday was supposed to be a simple day off for Alex Rodriguez. Eric Chavez got the start at third base, and Chavez even made the Yankees happy when he drove in the game's first run with an RBI triple in the fourth. But all happy feelings immediately turned sour when Chavez pulled up as he strolled into third.
Chavez pointed to his leg, and after Joe Girardi and the trainers came out to look at him, he was helped off the field. Rodriguez had to come into the game after all, and Chavez was seen moving around very gingerly.
For a guy with such a long history of injuries, this isn't the most surprising turn of events, but it is a sad one, as Chavez had been hitting pretty well off the bench. Even if you're a Yankees hater, you have to hope for the best for a guy like Chavez. We'll update you as we hear more.
