Cardinals' Kyle McClellan Heading To DL, Replaced By Prospect In Rotation

Stay connected for news and updates

As expected, St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle McClellan (6-2, 3.86) is going on the Disabled List with a left hip flexor strain, suffered in the first inning of his Monday outing against the Giants. Derrick Goold:

Holliday and McClellan will go on DL tomorrow, per Mozeliak. Lynn starts tomorrow. #stlcards

Lynn is Lance Lynn, ranked by Baseball America last winter as the Cardinals' sixth-best prospect. Lynn posted a 4.77 ERA last season with Triple-A Memphis, largely because he gave up 21 home runs in 29 starts. This season with Memphis -- and you know Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan love this -- Lynn's given up just one homer in 62 innings. He throws hard, and this season has apparently been working hard at keeping the ball down.

The Cardinals' lineup this season has been decimated by injuries, but to this point their rotation had been essentially immune, with five pitchers combining to start 55 of 56 of the club's games. Lynn's performance in the minors should offer at least some hope that the Cards won't miss McClellan too terribly much.
