On Friday, the Florida Marlins decided to send struggling outfielder Chris Coghlan down to the minor leagues. But it turns out Coghlan won't be reporting, at least immediately, because he'll be headed to the disabled list instead. Buster Olney:
As it turns out: Chris Coghlan on DL, not headed to minors. In aftermath of decision to send him to minors,he informed team of a knee issue.
So Coghlan has admitted to a knee problem of unknown nature and severity. Which is interesting, because he's also been dealing with a shoulder problem that, in all likelihood, will eventually need surgery. Coghlan's body has just been a mess.
Which at least goes a long way towards explaining his numbers. Over nearly 300 trips to the plate this season, Coghlan posted a .664 OPS, and this just two years after winning the NL Rookie of the Year award. He was the Marlins' regular center fielder and leadoff hitter until last Friday.
The newly-acquired Dewayne Wise has started Florida's last three games in center, and it looks like he'll get an opportunity to show what he has left in the tank.
