It was in the middle of May that regular Orioles first baseman Derrek Lee suffered an oblique injury. Lee avoided the disabled list for a few days before ultimately giving in, as so many victims of the oblique strain inevitably do. But in good news, Lee's recovery was a quick one. Lee missed only a few weeks, and after making all of one minor league rehab appearance, Lee has been activated by the Orioles:
First baseman Derrek Lee will be activated from the disabled list today, start at first base and bat fifth against Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero.
Lee started every Orioles game at first until getting hurt, and while his numbers were by no means impressive, he'd been having a respectable month of May before being sidelined.
To make room for Lee, reliever Pedro Viola was optioned to the minors. Viola threw in one game, spinning 1-2/3 shutout innings.
