Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez aggravated a back injury on May 29. He hasn't played since, and though he really wanted to avoid a stint on the disabled list, the Marlins weren't particularly fond of the idea of playing a man short. Finally, on Monday, the Marlins have placed Ramirez on the DL. Via Joe Capozzi:
Hanley Ramirez finally was put on the disabled list today with a left back strain, something the three-time All Star shortsotp badly wanted to avoid.
He was replaced on the roster by LHP Brad Hand, who was called up from Class AA Jacksonville.
Ramirez was given time to heal over the weekend, but it seems he didn't heal enough. The DL stint is retroactive to May 30, meaning he'll be eligible to return in just over a week. With luck, the rest will allow him to put frightening symptoms like blinding pain and leg tingling behind him.
Emilio Bonifacio and Ozzie Martinez will keep the shortstop position occupied in Ramirez's absence. As for Brad Hand, he'll be making his big league debut by starting in Josh Johnson's place on Tuesday. Hand is a 20-year-old lefty with a 3.53 ERA for AA Jacksonville. His strikeout and walk numbers aren't outstanding, but the Marlins are a little bit desperate.
