Oakland Demotes Kevin Kouzmanoff, Promotes Scott Sizemore

OAKLAND, CA - MAY 18: Alexi Casilla #12 of the Minnesota Twins reaches third base on a hit by Denard Span #2 of the Minnesota Twins as Kevin Kouzmanoff #5 of the Oakland Athletics loses control of the ball at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on May 18, 2011 in Oakland, California. Just a day after excising Andy LaRoche from their roster, the Oakland Athletics are subtracting another infielder and adding two. From MLB.com's Jane Lee:

#Athletics reinstate Rosales from DL, option Kouzmanoff and De Los Santos to Triple-A and call up Sizemore

That's Adam Rosales, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Scott Sizemore, and relief pitcher Fautino De Los Santos (who's pitched in just two games).

Rosales gave the A's solid service last season in a utlity role, playing all four infield positions and hitting decently. He'll essentially fill the role previously held by LaRoche.

The optioning of Kouzmanoff, while perhaps not a huge surprise, certainly wouldn't have been anticipated a month or two ago. Just last season, Kouzmanoff led the A's with 16 home runs and tied for the team lead with 71 RBI. But like many of his teammates, Kouzmanoff's slumped badly this spring, and with Sizemore recently coming to the A's in a trade with the Tigers and hitting well in Class AAA -- as usual -- this move must have seemed irresistible to management, so desperate to somehow goose the hitting attack.
