The USA Futures team defeated the World Futures, 6-4, in the 2011 MLB Futures Game on Sunday evening. A late comeback by USA in the eighth inning sealed the victory.
Grant Green decided he didn't want his earlier RBI to go to waste, so when he entered the batter's box to start the bottom of the eighth inning he unleashed a double to the dead part of center field inside Chase Field. A double by Tim Beckham scored Green to tie the game.
Two outs later, Austin Romine singled to left field, scoring Tim Beckham on a throw wide of home plate. Romine moved to second on the throw home and came around to score on an opposite-field double by Colorado Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado for the insurance run and a 6-4 lead.
Bryce Harper recorded his second strikeout of the game during the inning. After working his way out of an 0-2 hole, Harper swung and missed on the fifth pitch, a fastball down the middle of the plate.
Phillies RHP Jarred Cosart was the pitcher of record in the eighth inning and took the victory. Kelvin Herrera took the loss. Green was named the Larry Doby Award Winner as the most valuable player in the game. He went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
