Stephen Drew Injury: Shortstop Undergoes Ankle Surgery

Stay connected for news and updates

Wednesday night, Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew fractured his ankle while sliding into home plate. It was a somewhat innocuous-looking play with devastating results, and it was immediately wondered whether Drew might be done for the season. The word: yes, Drew is done for the season, and is undergoing Thursday surgery.

Mgr Kirk Gibson announces Stephen Drew to have surgery this afternoon

The good news is that Drew should be just fine in plenty of time to get ready for 2012. The bad news is that - well do I really need to explain the bad news? Stephen Drew is out for the season! He is important!

Though the Diamondbacks are hanging on the fringes of the playoff race at the moment, reports suggest that they're content to run with internal solutions at short, which means a lot of Willie Bloomquist and Cody Ransom. They may still make a deal for an infielder provided it doesn't cost them too much once they realize they're playing a lot of Willie Bloomquist and Cody Ransom, but they're not pulling any blockbusters. That's an organization that's too committed to future contention to do anything rash.
