Indians catcher Carlos Santana came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and the bases loaded. Battling a few pitches, Santana laced a ball to the third base side, but Alex Rodriguez stretched out for the ball, picked it out of his glove and threw it across the diamond for the final out of the inning. Instead of the Indians blowing open the game, they maintain their 2-0 lead.
Derek Jeter is still hitless, though he did draw a walk in the sixth inning during third plate appearance. However, Indians starter Justin Masterson has kept the Yankees quiet in this game, holding New York to two hits through six innings so far. Russell Martin picked up the Yankees' second hit of the game in the fifth inning.
Phil Hughes made it through five innings in his return to the major league mound, allowing two runs in the first inning, but holding the Indians scoreless for the next four. Luis Ayala and Boone Logan pitched the sixth inning, with the latter hitting a batter to load the bases. However, Logan was saved by Rodriguez' defense at third.
