In order to rest his arm, Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera will not participate in the 2011 MLB All-Star Game. Since Rivera was an elected All-Star, having received the player vote, the next-highest ranking reliever not already on the team automatically takes his place. Angels rookie closer Jordan Walden will replace Rivera.
Rivera has had soreness in his right arm and hasn’t pitched since July 3, a loss and blown save to the New York Mets. Rivera may still pitch tonight when the Yankees host the Tampa Bay Rays. He has been nursing soreness near his right elbow, but is available if Joe Girardi calls on him.
Rivera has been voted into the All-Star Game 12 times, including every season since 2004. Walden is the first Angel rookie named to All-Star team since Jason Dickson in 1997.
