Alex Rodriguez Injury: Yankees Third Baseman Seeking Second Opinion

Stay connected for news and updates

New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez has a slight tear in his meniscus, according to a report on Saturday morning. The tear may require surgery and would send Rodriguez to the disabled list, perhaps for a month or longer. But before wide-spread panic sets in, Rodriguez is seeking a second opinion to weigh his options and make sure surgery is absolutely necessary.

In fact, Rodriguez is seeking multiple opinions and huddling with physicians to make a decision. On Saturday, he told reporters he wants to be absolutely certain about his decision, with an emphasis placed on his health late in the season.

"I want to talk to (Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher) Ahmad and then I'm gonna see Dr. K and we'll call Dr. Ahmad and make a decision collectively," Rodriguez said after not playing in the Yankees' 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. "It's hard to get into missing 20, 30, 40 games when you don't know, but at the same time you don't want to limp toward the finish line. The most important games are played at the end."

Rodriguez has been playing with the injury since June 19 and may opt to continue playing through it, waiting until the offseason to have a procedure done. Last season, CC Sabathia played through the same injury, though the Yankees are worried Rodriguez's ailment is hurting his power.
