Dan Uggla Has Hitting Streak Snapped At 33 Games

As of Sunday afternoon, Dan Uggla's miracle streak is over.

Uggla came into action on Sunday riding a 33-game hitting streak, the longest in Atlanta Braves history. Starting for the Cubs was Matt Garza, and Uggla needed just one knock to carry his run through another weekend.

This time, though, he came up short. Uggla did make a contribution, when he drove home Michael Bourn in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly. But Uggla fouled out in the third, popped out in the fifth, and grounded out in the seventh. There was a chance he could get another opportunity in the ninth, but he was left standing in the hole when Martin Prado made the game's final out.

So for the first time since July 4, Dan Uggla went hitless. Over the course of his streak, he batted .377/.438/.762 with 49 hits and 15 home runs, lifting his OPS into the mid-.700s. Overall, he still hasn't been what the Braves were hoping he'd be, but his contract looks a lot better now than it did a month and a half ago.

Uggla's was the longest hitting streak in the majors in five years. It was tied for the 19th-longest in baseball history.

Dan Uggla Extends Hitting Streak To 33 Games With First-Inning Single

Dan Uggla's hitting streak is at 33 games after the Atlanta Braves second baseman singled in the first inning. On Friday night, Uggla took advantage of Carlos Zambrano's meltdown by taking the Chicago Cubs starter deep twice in the first five innings and setting a new Atlanta Braves' record for consecutive games with a hit, breaking the previous mark of 31.

With two outs and Freddie Freeman on first during Saturday's game against the Cubs, Uggla squared-off against Randy Wells. With the count even at 2-2, Uggla took a Wells pitch back up the middle, lining it into center for an easy basehit to extend his streak to 33 games.

Uggla's batting average continues to climb, with Saturday's effort pushing it to .232 on the year. (He also homered later on! Again!) Before the streak began on July 5, the Braves second baseman was hitting just .173, but has seen a dramatic improvement as he continues to rack-up base-hits. His OPS is on the way up, as well, and stands at .753, its highest point this season.

Dan Uggla Hitting Streak Reaches 32 Games With Home Run

When the Atlanta Braves last played at home, Dan Uggla was riding a pretty neat little hitting streak. That hit streak was still going as the Braves returned home Friday night to take on the Chicago Cubs, and Uggla wasted no time in extending it once again.

Facing Carlos Zambrano in the bottom of the second inning, Uggla fell behind in the count 0-1, when Zambrano made the following mistake:

Uggla pounded that fastball out to center field for his 25th home run. It gave the Braves a 1-0 lead, and it extended Uggla's hitting streak to 32 games. An Atlanta Braves-record 32 games, as Uggla came in tied with Rico Carty at 31. Tommy Holmes holds the franchise record at 37 games, done with the Boston Braves in 1945.

Uggla's hitting streak is the longest in the Majors so far this season. And for good measure, he would homer off Zambrano again in the bottom of the fifth. As of this writing, his OPS is up to a season-high .737.

Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla swung at the first pitch he saw in the first inning of Wednesday's game against the Florida Marlins, and he lined it into center field for a two-run single, extending his hitting streak to 31 games. Uggla tied Rico Carty for the longest streak in Atlanta Braves history, and it also tied him for the 25th-longest streak in major-league history.

Again, that's Dan Uggla, career .258 hitter, who was hitting .185 a month ago today. Just making sure you were paying attention.

Uggla continued his amazing stretch off of Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez, jumping on a first-pitch fastball with runners on second and third. While two of his hits in the past week have been infield dribblers, this one was absolutely pounded.

To give some idea of the rarity of a 31-game hitting streak, Uggla's next hit will give him the 23rd-longest streak of all-time, and two more hits will tie him for 19th-longest ever. He's entering some exclusive company -- not bad for someone who was struggling to stay above the Mendoza Line earlier this month.
