Last week, the Texas Rangers cut 41-year-old lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes, who had pitched only 24-1/3 innings this season but given up six home runs.
Rhodes passed through waivers, drew his unconditional release, and became a free agent Wednesday.
Well, you know that Tony La Russa loves his situational relievers, and particularly his old situational relievers. So this news from Derrick Goold shouldn't come as any real surprise:
Veteran lefty Arthur Rhodes has elected to sign with the Cardinals and could be activated as early as Friday for the opener of the series against Colorado.
Rhodes' agent Dan Horwits confirmed Thursday afternoon that the lefty had accepted the Cardinals offer.
Right now the Cardinals are carrying only one lefty reliever (newcomer Scrabble Rzepczynski) on their active roster, which must make La Russa's head want to explode. So he should be in a better mood down the stretch, if nothing else.
