DETROIT: Jered Weaver #36 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim yells into the Tigers dugout after being throw out of the game by homeplate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt for throwing a pitch close to Alex Avila #13 of the Detroit Tigers after Carlos Guillen #9 solo homerun to right field at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan. Well, this shouldn't come as a major surprise:
#Angels RHP Jered Weaver receives 6-game suspension for Sunday's actions in Detroit; he will appeal. Scioscia gets 1-game suspension.
As you'll recall, Sunday afternoon in Detroit, Weaver -- until recently the American League's No. 1 Cy Young candidate -- did this.
Just yesterday, Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco got suspended for six games for throwing at Billy Butler, almost exactly the same situation (you know, except for the guy in the other dugout throwing a no-hitter and whatnot).
Weaver will probably appeal, and because there's a silly protocol for these things, his suspension might get knocked back to five games. Which probably means he doesn't really miss a start, but just has it pushed back a day or two. In other words, this is just the lightest slap on the wrist. For the policy to have any teeth, a pitcher would have to be suspended for at least seven or eight days.
In fairness, Weaver probably wasn't actually trying to kill Avila, or even wound him. When a pitcher really wants to get a guy, he throws slightly behind his head. Weaver was obviously just trying to send a message, that message being, "I'm mad about the two home runs I gave up, and about losing this game, and about my brother not being good enough to pitch anymore, and I'm hot and tired right now anyway so just throw me out of the game please before I really get mad."
Mission accomplished. We can only hope that if Weaver had demonstrated some real desire to maim Alex Avila, the suspension would have been a bit more serious.
