Cole Hamels Injury: Shoulder Inflammation Sends Phillies Lefty To DL

Just as the Philadelphia Phillies seemed to get the real Roy Oswalt back -- the right-hander was winging 93-mph fastballs into the eighth inning of his last start -- they lose one of the world's best pitchers to a shoulder injury. No, not that one. Not that one, either. Rather, Cole Hamels is the latest victim of the Phillies' injury bug. From Todd Zolecki:

Cole Hamels has been placed on the DL. Phillies recall Pete Orr to take his place.

Pete Orr has only allowed one earned run in his entire minor-league career. Where do the Phillies find these guys?

Hamels' injury is with his left shoulder and it isn't supposed to be serious, as an MRI showed only simple inflammation. But with the Phillies enjoying a bazillion-game lead in the NL East, they can afford to be prudent and give Hamels as much rest as he needs to calm his shoulder down. Kyle Kendrick will likely fill Hamels' rotation slot, with Scott Mathieson waiting in the wings.
