In the middle of last week, Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan collided with infielder Adam Kennedy chasing after a ball in foul ground. Ryan hasn't gotten into a game since, due to shoulder soreness, and though he was initially thought to be day-to-day, on Monday the team made a move. Geoff Baker:
Brendan Ryan to go on DL with sprained AC joint in left shoulder. Retro to Aug. 4. INF Luis Rodriguez up from AAA
Ryan will need at least another 10-14 days to get back into playing shape. Thankfully, this injury shouldn't have any real long-term consequences. The excellent defender has also been a decent hitter this year, what with his 90 OPS+.
Rodriguez has been up with the M's before, but he's probably going to spend the bulk of this stint on the bench while Jack Wilson fills in for Ryan at short. Wilson hasn't played much this season, but Ryan's injury gives the M's a chance to play him more often and try to peddle him in a waiver trade.
