Leo Nunez Is Now Juan Carlos Oviedo, And On The Restricted List

The Florida Marlins held on to closer Leo Nunez through the trading deadline, citing a need for an ace reliever when they move into their new ballpark. That seemed like a good plan! It would have been a shame if anything were to mess it ...

(Leo) Nunez's real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and he's 29, a year older than listed in the team media guide. The Marlins placed Nunez on Major League Baseball's restricted list, and he isn't expected to pitch in the final week of the season.

Other than that ...

The above quote is from the Associated Press article, and there is no word yet on the reason for the identity swap, nor if Nunez/Oviedo is in legal trouble. He is back in the Dominican Republic straightening everything out, which means the Marlins will be without Oviedo for the rest of the season

That's not that big of a deal considering the Marlins are well out of the race. The Milwaukee Brewers, though, are still jockeying for home-field advantage in the first round, and they play three games against the Marlins this weekend. There's a chance that Nunez/Oviedo's replacement blows a save, which could mean the Diamondbacks have to go on the road against the Phillies. And, again, this is all because Leo Nunez was really Juan Carlos Oviedo, who was really Miguel Sánchez, who was really Dr. Nguyen Van Falk. There are end-of-the-season surprises, and then there are plot twists.
