The Cardinals lost the best hitter in the game this offseason, and they've likely lost the best pitching coach in the game for an extended period of time. Dave Duncan is taking a leave of absence to spend time with his wife, who underwent brain surgery in August. In the interim, the Cards will turn to Derek Lilliquist.
From ESPN's Jayson Stark:
With Dave Duncan's status uncertain, Cardinals announce Derek Lilliquist will be their pitching coach. Dyer Miller will be new bullpen coach
Lilliquist was the Cardinals' bullpen coach, and he was a reliever with five different teams over an eight-year major-league career.
The former #6 overall pick in 1987 was a minor-league pitching coach for the Cardinals before he became the bullpen coach, and he had a brief moment in the spotlight this past World Series when he got the wrong reliever up in the bullpen in a Cardinals loss.
