The injured Yankee closer got loud cheers when he was introduced.
The introductions began at 7:14 p.m. ET and when the Baltimore Orioles were introduced there was hardly a peep from the crowd here. The only real reaction? When manager Buck Showalter was introduced, mostly a smattering of boos.
But once the Yankees were announced the crowd came to life -- somewhat. The new stadium has never been known to be as loud as the old one, the argument that many of the fans who can afford to come are bandwagoners and wall street types. So I was surprised that the fans at least seemed to show a tad more energy.
Easily the best part of the pregame ceremony was when Mariano Rivera was both introduced and then when he came out and threw the first pitch, with Enter Sandman playing. The PA announcer didn't even mention his name, just said it was tonight's first pitch and then the music played.
