The Halos left-hander will have bone spurs removed from his elbow this winter.

Following his final start of the season Monday night -- 6⅓ innings, three runs allowed -- Los Angeles Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson revealed that he has been pitching with bone spurs in his elbow for the last several months. Wilson (13-10, 3.83) expects to undergo arthroscopic surgery on the elbow in the offseason to remove the floating pieces of bone, and should be ready to go in time for Spring Training.

The 31-year-old Wilson expressed that discomfort in his elbow forced him to considerable modifications to his mechanics as the season wore on, per MLB.com:

"I tried to make a million adjustments to get around it, to the point where now I'm standing on the first-base side, trying to get an angle because I can't throw sinkers anymore because my arm doesn't work right," Wilson said. "But you're paid to go out there and play."

Wilson underwent the same procedure at the end of 2008 when he was still pitching in relief for the Texas Rangers, then went on to put together his best three seasons on the mound. The Angels' $77½-million man disappointed in his first year in Orange County -- putting up career-worst numbers as a starter -- but fans may find some solace in the hope that his poor second-half numbers were simply the result of his injury.
