Ah. Right. The Expos. Forgot about them. I don't begrudge the D.C. area their new baseball team, but I do miss the Expos. Imagine a brand-new downtown stadium in the heart of one of the coolest North American cities. It would have worked, right? With the resurgence in baseball interest over the last decade, it had to have worked.
We'll never know. And Dave Kaufman of the Montreal Gazette takes the Nationals' playoff berth as an opportunity to lament the loss of his team, and his inability to enjoy the success of what they became:
In a desperate attempt to fool myself, I took to social media and repeated the maxim: They’re not our team. They’re not the Expos. I’ve been saying that since George W. Bush threw out their opening-day pitch at RFK Stadium in 2005.
Kaufman doesn't take the "we'll never know" position, though. He still thinks Montreal is a viable destination for a major-league team. I'd love to see it, even if I doubt we ever will.
