The San Francisco Giants accomplished the near-impossible Monday night, coming back from the death knell of a two-game deficit for the second time this postseason. The Giants defeated the Cardinals 9-0 at home Monday night to win the NL pennant, earning their second World Series berth in three seasons. Monday's The Game 7 victory was their sixth at the brink of elimination this postseason, tying the one-season record set by the 1985 Kansas City Royals.
For Grant Brisbee of McCovey Chronicles, the Giants' wonderful 2012 postseason has been all about the improbable or, as he terms it, "nonsense":
For a team to make the World Series, they have to be good... All of the teams involved in the playoffs are good.
But once they're there … the potential for nonsense is high. We're clear that Marco Scutaro is the greatest second baseman since Joe Morgan. That's just math and science. But even the greatest second baseman ever can't be expected to hit .500 over a full seven-game series. It's just not likely. Unless there's nonsense.
Barry Zito pitched a brilliant game against a team that devoured left-handed pitching. Remember the whispers from a "source close to the team" that the organization was fed up and planning to buy out his contract? In order for the Giants to make the World Series, Zito had to stick around and be otherworldly. Nonsense...
Barry Zito laid down an RBI bunt single.
Nonsense. It's all nonsense. And it's beautiful nonsense. Ryan Vogelsong is going to pitch in a World Series. Zito will likely start Game 1. Buster Posey and Hunter Pence didn't hit a lick, but it didn't matter. To get to the World Series, a team needs to have things go their way. They have to be good, too. It has to be the perfect amalgam of talent and nonsense.
The Giants now will take on the Detroit Tigers for the World Series title. The series begins Wednesday night in San Francisco; Game 1 is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
