The St. Louis Cardinals will host the Washington Nationals on Sunday at Busch Stadium in Game 1 of the 2012 National League Division Series. It will be the first postseason game played by a team from the nation's capital since 1933.
Washington will send Cy Young contender Gio Gonzalez (21-8, 2.89 ERA) to the mound, opposed by Adam Wainwright (14-13, 3.94 ERA) of the Cardinals. Gonzalez was stellar in his one start against St. Louis this season, throwing a five-hit shutout on Aug. 31. Wainwright was 1-1 with a 7.27 ERA against Washington this season.
Washington advanced to the playoffs by winning 98 games and the National League East. The Nationals finished the season with the best record in baseball, besting the Cincinnati Reds by one game. St. Louis earned the new second wild card spot this year, and took down the Atlanta Braves 6-3 on Friday night in the wild card play-in game to advance to the NLDS.
The Nationals won the season series against the defending World Series champion Cardinals, 4-3.
