The Royals have reportedly contacted the Red Sox in their search for starting pitching.
Though Kansas City has already added Ervin Santana and Jeremy Guthrie to its starting-pitching haul this winter, the club is on the lookout for one more starter. Their latest reported target: Red Sox southpaw Jon Lester.
Lester, who is in the last guaranteed year of the five-year, $30 million contract he signed in March 2009, posted the worst season of his career in 2012. In 33 starts, the lefty tossed 205⅓ innings, allowing 216 hits and 117 runs (110 earned), for a 4.82 ERA. FIP has a kinder view of Lester's season, giving him a mark of 4.06. Though Lester lowered his walk rate from 3.5 BB/9 in 2011 to 3.0 BB/9 in 2012, his strikeout rate tanked from 8.5 K/9 to 7.3 K/9.
WEEI's Rob Bradford received confirmation from a Red Sox source that Boston has been in contact with Kansas City about a potential deal. The proposed trade would include the Royals' top outfield prospect, Wil Myers. However, the source denied that any deal is close.
