You might have missed it because of Tryptophan and stuff, but the Mets reportedly made a contract offer to David Wright -- slated for free agency after next season -- that wasn't considered a serious attempt to actually re-sign their All-Star third baseman.

Tuesday, though, the Mets seem to be serious. The latest from Jon Heyman:

The Mets are offering David Wright a seven-year deal for $135 million-$140 million, an offer that's extremely serious and could lead to a deal, according to people familiar with the talks.

There seems now, finally, be some real urgency to talks now. The offer would pay Wright close to $20 million a year, a significant raise from the $16 million he's now due to make in 2013.

Sure, $20 million might seem like a lot of money for a player who turns 30 in a few weeks. But in the context of the massive new TV money that's beginning to flow into some clubs' coffers, $20 million might not seem like so much at all in the coming seasons.
