Jason Bay is a member of the Seattle Mariners as the team added him to their 40-man roster on Saturday, according to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times. To make room for Bay, the Mariners designated pitcher Mauricio Robles for assignment. Bay's contract guarantees him $500,000, whether he makes the team out of spring training or not. If he does make it, his base salary will be $1 million with $2 million more possible in incentives.

Bay is is three seasons removed from the last time he was an all-star level slugger. His production took a major tumble in 2012, where he hit just .165/.237/.299 in 70 games with the Mets. He has never been a great fielder, so he was a below average player last season.

If the Mariners can get anywhere near 2009-level production from Bay, this would become one of the best deals in baseball. If not, Bay will just take up cash and a roster spot that could be given to any number of minor league players that could match his level of play.
