Joba Chamberlain broke his ankle on a trampoline, the New York Yankees reported.
Joba Chamberlain was supposed to be as coddled and protected from injury like few young pitchers before him, but the Yankees right-hander pitched 28 innings last year before going down to Tommy John surgery. The Yankees tried to help him stay healthy, but some injuries you can't prevent. Like, oh, a rogue trampoline accident. From Jack Curry of YES:
Joba Chamberlain dislocated right ankle yesterday and had surgery last night. Cashman called it a significant injury.Cashman said Joba injured himself while playing with his son. They were jumping around on a "trampoline" of sorts.
Cashman said Joba's injury was an "open dislocation." He is in hospital and will be there for several days. Girardi visited him this morning
It doesn't sound like a tweak that he slept on before figuring out that something was wrong. Sounds like a horrific, gruesome injury. Right now the jokes are flying on Twitter -- "The Man Show" references, and copious links to the episode with Homer's free trampoline -- but all I can think about is a professional baseball player rehabbing for a year, almost getting back, and then dislocating his ankle.
Sounds painful and ... painful.
