Marlon Byrd has played more center field for the Red Sox than anyone else this season. Yeah. So it's with great pleasure that the Red Sox welcome Jacoby Ellsbury back to the lineup, as the center fielder was activated from the DL Friday, with Justin Germano getting DFA'd to make room.
Ellsbury hurt his shoulder on April 13 when Reid Brignac fell on him during an attempted double play. Since then, the Red Sox have used eight different center fielders, with Byrd getting the bulk of the playing time. Since Byrd's release, though, Ryan Kalish has been getting most of the starts.
Ellsbury is a huge component of the Red Sox' lineup, and he'll try to replicate the surprise MVP-caliber season that he had last year. He was 5-for-27 in eight rehab games for three different Red Sox affiliates, and he'll be in the starting lineup when the Red Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.

The Red Sox' injury-riddled outfield is about to get healthier, with center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury reportedly to come off the DL this weekend and play for the first time since early April. Is it too late for the Sox, though?

The Red Sox are off to a rough start that got rougher with their 18-3 loss to the Rangers on Tuesday. They could have used some good news, and they got some regarding Jacoby Ellsbury:
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who suffered a subluxation of his right (non-throwing shoulder) last Friday, had his MRI exams read by noted California orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum and will not need immediate surgery, manager Bobby Valentine said Tuesday.
So that’s good. Surgery would certainly have put Ellsbury out for a longer period than the six weeks mentioned when the injury happened on Friday. More from Valentine:
“He had some hand manipulation for range of motion. They’re trying to take it slowly to get it better. I don’t know that there is anything on the horizon other than the normal treatment and see how he does day by day,” Valentine said.
Well, that doesn’t say too much. Ellsbury is on the 15-day disabled list and it seems far too optimistic to think he’d be back in that short a period of time. The Red Sox will likely be cautious with their star outfielder.

The Boston Red Sox were supposed to have hitting. The pitching, something of a concern, but the hitting wasn't supposed to be a problem. Then one day you wake up and Jason Repko is in the starting lineup. That's what happened after Jacoby Ellsbury went down with a shoulder injury on Friday. What's worse is that Repko is a) the second player the Sox called up, and b) probably the better option when compared to Che-Hsuan Lin.
So it makes sense that the Red Sox would at least explore the trade market for additional outfielders. From WEEI.com:
Even so, the team is planning on spending a not insignificant chunk of time without the runner-up in last year’s AL MVP balloting, and so it should come as little surprise that one major league source said that the Red Sox are "actively" exploring the market for available outfielders to determine whether the team will be able to shore up an area where there is limited organizational depth.
The article lists Coco Crisp as a potential target that two talent evaluators brought up to WEEI, though considering that he still has about $13 million left on his contract, that'd be a pretty steep price for a stopgap solution. If Ellsbury is going to be out for longer than a month or two, though, the Red Sox would probably prefer to do something drastic than cross their fingers and hope that either Repko or Lin -- or Darnell McDonald, who will probably get the bulk of the at-bats in Ellsbury's absence -- can hold their head above water.

The beginning of the 2012 Boston Red Sox season has gone from bad to worse. They managed a win in their home opener on Friday, but suffered a far worse loss as center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list with a dislocated shoulder.
Benjamin Buchanan of SB Nation Boston relays the official Red Sox statement on Ellsbury:
Jacoby injured his right shoulder during yesterday's game. An MRI was performed and showed findings consistent with a subluxed shoulder. We are in the process of gathering further information and determining the treatment plan. Jacoby will be placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to today's game.
Injuries of this type usually require a four-to-six week recovery time, so it is likely that Ellsbury will remain on the disabled list longer than 15 days. Boston just wants to ensure that they will be able to activate their key player as soon as he is able to play.

It’s 2012, and that means we don’t have to rely just on baseball reporters or sources to get information from baseball players to the general public.
Jacoby Ellsbury is on Twitter, and Saturday morning he sent out this tweet about his shoulder injury:
Thx for all the well wishes. Subluxed my right shoulder in yesterday’s game. No timetable set, working hard to get back as soon as possible.
— Jacoby Ellsbury (@JacobyEllsbury) April 14, 2012
As noted late Friday, Ellsbury is expected to miss at least six weeks. Thus, the Red Sox will likely be seeking another outfielder, since they’re now down two starters with Carl Crawford also on the DL.
Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal had a couple of outfield suggestions for Boston, including Scott Podsednik (currently at Triple-A in the Phillies organization) and Clete Thomas, recently DFA’d by the Tigers. The Cubs have also been shopping center fielder Marlon Byrd, who seems a good fit for the Red Sox.

The shoulder injury suffered by Jacoby Ellsbury in the Red Sox' Friday-afternoon home opener didn't look good when it happened, and now the rumor looks even worse:
Ellsbury has a dislocation or partial dislocation of his shoulder, according to baseball source. Minimum of six weeks; could be longer
— Gordon Edes (@GordonEdes) April 14, 2012
Minimum of six weeks. So let's assume eight weeks. That places Ellsbury's return in the middle of June. Carl Crawford's still on the Disabled List, and really hasn't played well since May of last year. At the moment, the list of healthy Red Sox outfielders is precisely this: Darnell McDonald, Cody Ross, Ryan Sweeney. They're probably going to call up Che-Hsuan Lin -- who didn't rank among the organization's top 30 prospects before this season -- simply because there's an unwritten baseball rule that says you have to carry four outfielders on your roster.
It's early, still. But it's starting to get a little scary.
