The news the most people care about is that the San Francisco Giants signed Madison Bumgarner to a five-year contract extension, with an additional two years of options. Fewer people care about how much the contract is worth. Fewer people still care about the year-by-year breakdown of said contract. So here we are, with the year-by-year breakdown of said contract! We will smother you with numbers.
The other Bumgarner structure is if he does't make Super-2 status.If he IS NOT Super-2, salaries '13-'17: $750K, 3.75m, 6.75m, 9.75m, 11.5m— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) April 16, 2012
If Bumgarner IS a Super-2 arb eligible, salaries 2013-17 of $3 million, $5.5 m, $7m, $10m, $12m. Gets $1m signing bonus, $1.5m opt. buyout.— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) April 16, 2012
So, if Bumgarner isn't designated a Super 2 player, he will work his way up from $0.75 million to $11.5 million. If he is designated a Super 2 player, he will work his way up from $3 million to $12 million. It's kind of a shame that Super 2 includes the number 2 because I think it would be neat if there were super players and non-super players. I mean, there already are, but they aren't labeled as such.
