Report: Red Sox Close To Acquiring Marlon Byrd

The Boston Red Sox started Jason Repko in center field their last three games. Think about that. Swirl it around in your mouth a little bit. Taste the subtleties, like a fine wine. Now note that according to Nick Cafardo, the Red Sox are close to acquiring Marlon Byrd from the Chicago Cubs.

Byrd is in the last season of a three-year, $15 million contract that has worked out well for the Cubs. However the Cubs have prospect Brett Jackson waiting in AAA, so a trade makes sense for both sides.

Byrd is hitting .070 for the season -- don't worry, his on-base percentage is .149 -- but over the last two seasons for the Cubs, he hit.286/.337/.414 (OPS+ 102), so it's probably best not to make too much over the first 43 at-bats of the season.

There's no word yet on what the Cubs will receive in exchange, nor how much, if any, of Byrd's salary the Cubs will pay.
