James McDonald Loses No-Hitter On Infield Single

Pirates starter James McDonald no-hit the Rockies through the first six innings of a game Wednesday afternoon. A full no-hitter didn't seem very likely, as McDonald entered the seventh having thrown 80 pitches, and it became unlikelier still when McDonald began the seventh by walking Carlos Gonzalez. Still, the no-hitter was intact for three more pitches, until Troy Tulowitzki hit a grounder to third:

That could've been ruled an error, I suppose, since the ball hit Pedro Alvarez in the palm instead of the fingers, but Tulowitzki was given an infield single. This is where my MLB.tv feed froze immediately afterward:

That's what I call Pedro Alvarez Face. Pedro Alvarez is in so far over his head.

Anyhow, no-hitter gone, McDonald had to go to work with two on and none out. He retired the next three batters he faced, but thanks to a wild pitch and a fly ball, he allowed a run, which was the game's first run because the Pittsburgh Pirates hit like they think the baseball is full of Nickelodeon slime. For six innings, James McDonald had a no-hitter against the Rockies. He lost his no-hitter on an infield single, and now he might lose.

...but wait! Just as I was about to publish this, Pedro Alvarez hit a solo home run and the game is tied. So now McDonald could get a no-decision for his efforts. That would be a little less humiliating.
