Andres Torres Injury: Mets' Center Fielder Leaves Game With Calf Strain

Andres Torres left Thursday's New York Mets game with a left calf injury.

The Andres Torres Era in New York lasted six innings before his first calf injury. And the Mets' season is underway.

Torres, the Mets' new center fielder and biggest addition to their lineup over the offseason, was chasing for a fly ball in center when he pulled up lame. David Lennon probably has it accurately pegged:

Torres had calf problems last year with the San Francisco Giants, and they lingered all season. He's like a sports car that isn't meant for day-to-day use -- in the NFL-inspired 16-game baseball season, Andres Torres is king.

Scott Hairston replaced Torres in the game, and it's probably a safe bet to assume that he'll get a majority of the innings in center field for the next couple of weeks. If Torres does have to go on the DL, the Mets might turn to Kirk Nieuwenhuis, whose name I totally spelled from memory just now.
