The Detroit Tigers have placed pitcher Doug Fister on the 15-day disabled list effective Sunday with a "left costochondral strain," or in plain terms, a strained muscle on his left side.
Fister left Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox after lasting almost four innings with the Tigers leading 2-0. He left without indicating his injury after talking with manager Jim Leyland and a trainer on the mound. Fister also battled a sore finger in spring training.
Detroit recalled left-hander Brayan Villarreal from Triple-A. The Detroit Free-Press is reporting that the likeliest candidate to replace Fister in the rotation could be Duane Below:
The club didn't announce who will replace him in the rotation. But Duane Below, a starting candidate in spring training, could be in line to do so. Below relieved Fister and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
The Tigers won Saturday's game 10-0.
