Rolen's left shoulder caused him problems before, including last season when he played in just 65 games due to injury and was forced to have shoulder surgery. Rolen has played in 29 games this season and is batting .174 with two home runs and 11 RBI.
Costanzo played in 23 games at AAA Louisville, hitting .291 with three home runs. Costanzo also played 11 games with Pensacola, the Reds' AA affiliate.
