Rockies Catcher Eliezer Alfonzo Successfully Appeals Drug Suspension, Eligible To Play

Last September, Rockies catcher Eliezer Alfonzo was suspended for 100 games for reported PED use; the 100-game suspension was given because it had been his second positive test.

Sunday, it was announced that Alfonzo had successfully appealed his suspension and is eligible to play immediately — and for the same reasons that Ryan Braun won his appeal:

Major League Baseball dropped its 100-game suspension of Colorado Rockies catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for a positive drug test because of the same procedural issues that came up in the Ryan Braun case.

Alfonzo appealed and was notified within the past week that MLB had lifted the ban. The reason: a dispute over the storage and shipment of his urine sample similar to the one that led to Braun’s 50-game drug penalty getting overturned by an arbitrator in February, the person said.

There’s no word yet on whether Alfonzo, who played in 25 games for the Rockies in 2011, would be in shape to play right away.
