Wednesday night, Tampa Bay Rays infielder Will Rhymes was hit in the arm by a pitch, and after he took first base, he passed out and was carted off the field.

Wednesday night, Tropicana Field was the scene of a very unusual and very frightening incident. The Boston Red Sox were playing the Tampa Bay Rays, and in the bottom of the eighth, the Rays led 2-1. Second baseman Will Rhymes stood in against reliever Franklin Morales, and Morales drilled Rhymes in the forearm with a pitch.

A very significant wound developed almost immediately:

Rhymes was checked out, and he remained in the game and proceeded to first base. A short while later, Rhymes removed himself, feeling ill, and he couldn't make it more than a few feet from the base before he passed out.

Rhymes remained on the ground for several minutes, with Tropicana Field falling silent.

He did eventually come to, and he was helped to a cart and driven off the field. As Rhymes rode on the cart, he appeared extremely white, and he's presently being examined. We will let you know as soon as there is an update on the situation, but the Rays' TV broadcast was speculating about a bone fracture.
